Placing a sheet of delicate Gampi paper on top of his piano keyboard, Moran then covers his hands with charcoal and plays a familiar Jazz or improvisational score, thereby creating a material record of the movement and action of the music. The resulting drawings become the only records of these performances: at once tactile and authentic, yet illegible and abstract. Both labor and time are explored in these active, assertive works on paper that are evocative of automatic drawings and gestural abstraction.
Moran’s works on paper are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Studio Museum of Harlem, New York, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum for American Art, New York, among others.4of 4
