Placing a sheet of delicate Gampi paper on top of his piano keyboard, Moran then covers his hands with charcoal and plays a familiar Jazz or improvisational score, thereby creating a material record of the movement and action of the music. The resulting drawings become the only records of these performances: at once tactile and authentic, yet illegible and abstract. Both labor and time are explored in these active, assertive works on paper that are evocative of automatic drawings and gestural abstraction.1of 4
