The artist probes his art historical predecessors: both canonical and relatively unknown painters, writers and illustrators. The presence of these muses, which dot Kantarovsky’s compositions simultaneously questions and indulges in a lineage of painterly impulses. Presented here is a selection from a series of monotypes, the imagery of which was inspired by photographs taken in Russia by his grandmother. In the foreground of Kolkohz, the subject’s heavy, black boot of a mounted figure is seen against the belly of a black and white cow. In the background, framed by the animal’s torso and legs, is a bucolic scene. The title of the work refers to the Soviet collective farming system that emerged in Russia in the 1920s.2of 2
