Cabbage (and Phillip) is a small-scale still life featuring the vegetable and a shadow of a human profile. The cabbage belongs to a series of intentionally open-ended emblems—in addition to monkeys, cocks, noses, elves and fairies, and female figures, among others—that recur throughout the artist’s work and form a personal lexicon.1of 3
