Kantarovsky’s most well-known body of work, his figurative paintings, contains drastic shifts in scale, paint application and stylization. Evoking the feeling of an uneasy inner monologue, figures are gawked at, exposed, poked, or spooned medicine. They interact with one another, as well as the edges of the canvas itself, testing the confines of their given bodies and their given frame. Mutualism II is an excellent example of such a painting, in which a pale nude female figure is presented petting and cradling a smaller, nude male figure, gnawing at her arm. The juxtaposition of the elegant, feminine figure with delicate features versus the more grotesque features of her companion create an arresting composition in which the viewer is asked to reckon with the mysterious relationship of the two.
